A message from Alumni Association President T.J. Basalla on the retirement of Rick Wright:
To My Fellow Broadcasters-
I want to share with you some news about the end of an era at our alma mater. Our professor, mentor, friend and founding faculty advisor, Dr. Rick Wright, is retiring from teaching classes at the Newhouse School at the end of this school year. Just yesterday, his colleagues on the faculty at the Newhouse School voted to recommend Dr. Wright for Professor Emeritus status.
As we would expect, Dr. Wright says he will maintain a strong presence in Syracuse RADIO and will remain actively involved with WJPZ and all of us. Also, it’s not surprising that he says he will spend time in retirement writing a book about the history of radio in Central New York.
In conversations with members of the WJPZ Alumni Association Board of Directors, Dr. Wright specifically expressed his gratitude to the students and alumni of WJPZ, which he says will continue to serve as a legacy for his decades of work at Newhouse.
Coming up on March 2nd, we’ll toast Dr. Wright while no doubt hearing a story or two from him at our microphone. Next year, for Banquet 29, we’re already thinking about how to plan something really special to honor his career and influence.
I know that at the Banquet this year and next, you’ll join me in thanking Rick Wright for answering that knock on his door and all that he has done for us since then.
In the one-of-a-kind spirit of Rick Wright, I wish you Good Radio-
WJPZ Alumni Association President
